Grit $17.98 Ever since Martin Swan’s Mouth Music project sputtered to a disappointing halt around 2000, there had been a hole in the music world that was waiting to be filled by someone else willing to take unabashedly traditional Scottish music and juxtapose it with unashamedly slamming breakbeats and 21st century production techniques. Martyn Bennett had actually been working that territory since his eponymous debut in 1995 but really came into his own in the years since; Grit is a tour de force of avant-folk fusion music on which he manages to craft irresistibly hip-shaking beats and bring them to bear on traditional material without sacrificing any of the stark beauty of his source material. “Chanter” is a simultaneous celebration of house music, bagpipe technique, and the Scottish vocal tradition of puirt a beul; “Nae Regrets Medley” samples an old man singing what sounds like a variation on the bawdy song “Bonny Black Hare,” and throws it in with metal-edged guitars, orchestral strings, and a big beat rhythm that would make Fatboy Slim weep all over his decks; the aptly titled “Rant” makes exquisitely intricate use of layered and rhythmically manipulated vocal samples, dubwise sound manipulation, and a Shetland fiddle. On “Wedding,” Bennett creates a minimalist but richly textured quilt of sound with an altered fiddle, Gaelic spoken-word samples, and eventually, a simple one-two beat. That last track is more interesting than fun, but the rest of the album comes down solidly on the latter side. Brilliant. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Michael Marra – Drones; Ian Burdge – Cello; Millennia Strings – Strings; Chris Worsey – Cello; Martyn Bennett – Guitar, Harmonium, Sampling, Small Pipes, Sound Effects, Strings, Viola; Maya Bickell – Violin; Giles Broadbent – Violin; Anna Giddey – Violin; Lizzie Higgins – Vocals; Stephen Hussey – Violin; |

What Sort of Health Care Facility Offers Skin Care Products?
When a patient walks into the office of a dermatologist, he or she expects to find information about skin care products. The makers of such products hope that careful placement of their brochures has created the impression that the pictured product provides patients with the most effective skin care.
Still, displays of skin care products can be found, as well, in places far removed from a dermatologist’s office. Some of those displays are meant to convince patients that a certain health care practitioner has received advanced training in the determination of each patient’s care needs. Too often, however, patients pay for aids that have not been recommended by a qualified physician.
Today, one can obtain some help at a clinic in the mall. One can pamper one’s skin by going to a spa. With procedures now so accessible and affordable, how can a patient know that he or she has discovered a health care practitioner who is equipped to provide the most effective skin care?
A patient’s quest for a reputable facility should start with an evaluation of the patient’s wants and needs. Perhaps the patient has decided to sample the manner by which microdermabrasion can change the surface of the skin. During microdermabrasion, friction is applied to it. The practitioner pushes aluminum oxide crystals over it.
At a quality facility, the health care practitioner uses only quality crystals. Patients might hear the personnel in that facility mention the word “grit.” “Grit refers to the grain size of the aluminum oxide crystal. When patients are treated with a large grit (a smaller grain size) then they tend to leave a facility with smoother skin.
Of course those crystals are not the only skin care products that enjoy widespread use today. At modern-day facilities one also finds something called “naked minerals.” Many spa operators have those “naked minerals,” and they emphasize the ability of those minerals to penetrate the skin. That penetration has been pointed to as an indication that naked minerals do in fact provide the “most effective skin care.”
Today, patients do not need to go to a clinic or a spa in order to obtain quality skin. Today, patients can purchase the products that they need by going to the pharmacy. Patients should plan to look for products that contain two different proteins—collagen and elastin.
Collagen has characteristics that are much like a rope with many fibers. When skin contains sufficient collagen, then that skin demonstrates a natural strength. Those who touch that skin can feel that it has a decided firmness.
Elastin makes skin more flexible. While collagen can lend support to sagging, the elastin in it gives stretched skin the ability to return to its original position. Both elastin and collagen can prevent the appearance of wrinkles lines on the face.
Healthy skin does not start with the application of a product that can only fill in the wrinkle lines on the face. The most effective skin care calls for a stimulation of collagen and elastin production. Such care can hold-off any changes in composition that have been associated with the aging process.
Those who take the time to carry-out beneficial care routines, soon find that they see a healthier and a more youthful face, whenever they look in the mirror.
