explosives in space- would they even work?
Do explosives have nearly as much power in the vacuum of space a compared to in our atmosphere? C4, a grenade, even a nuke?
It seems to me that much of an explosions force is from the atmospheric displacement/rapid heating and resultant blast/concussion/air hammer. In quarry rock demolition, the shockwave is imparted to the material of the rock itself.
So how would such explosives perform in the vacuum of space? Would they work at all? Just go “fizz”? What about a nuclear detonation? Aside from it’s radiation and emp, and bright flash of light… How powerful would it really BE? would satellite/space stations be blasted apart? I dont think so. they may just get a little brighter light and radiation than the normal ‘ sunrise’… Wouldn’t they?
At very close range (in contact), the explosives work just fine. At a distance, however, their effect is greatly diminished, due to the lack of an atmosphere to carry a pressure wave.
A nuclear weapon in deep space results in a flash of light (including x-rays, gamma rays, etc.), and a brief dose of charged particles. It would have a larger effect than conventional explosives, but a meter of concrete would probably be sufficient cover at a range of, say, 1 kilometer.
However, in the confines of a planet’s magnetic field, nuclear weapons are quite lethal to satellites. The charged particles become entangled in the magnetic field, and bounce back and forth. Satellites receive a very high dose of these particles, causing many electronics failures.
