Gas Arc
What kind of gas does an electrical arc put off? The steel or asbestos sheets in the arc chutes cools the gas.?
monophot is basically right but to add a couple points. Most circuit breakers are open to the air so the gas present in the arc (where the gas gets ionized into a plasma) is the mixture of gases in air, 78% N2, 21% O2, plus H2O, CO2, etc. Once the arc forms, the very high temperature causes expansion of the gas that is not ionized. The arc, itself, does not “put off” any gas, some breakers are vacuum breakers so there is not air and only very low pressure gases. The arc also melts the contacts, typically a silver alloy, so there are often droplets of molten metal. The arc does not extinguish because it gets cold, it goes out because the voltage rises to the point where the current stops. The steel chutes act to blow the arc off the contacts in order to minimize erosion of the contacts.
