Flute Square End

What is this instrument called?

this instrument is easy to make out. Its sounds like a flute but instead of playing it on the side, you play it by holding it with both hands. You blow on the holes and a different note comes out, obviously. It has different lengths. It starts out small and gets bigger. it looks like yellow bamboo sticks and they all have small square holes where i think the sound comes out. It comes in different sizes to where there are some that the long parts goes REALLY long. So, the yellow bamboo sticks are stuck together and forms an instrument that starts out small and at the end is a bigger stick. I know my description is confusing, but describing it is hard for an instrument u dont know.

The pan flute (also known as panpipes) is an ancient musical instrument based on the principle of the stopped pipe, consisting usually of ten or more pipes of gradually increasing length (and, at times, girth). The pan flute has long been popular as a folk instrument, and is considered the ancestor of both the pipe organ and the harmonica, or mouth organ. The pan flute is named for its association with the rustic Greek god Pan. The pipes of the pan flute are typically made from bamboo or giant reed (Arundo donax); other materials used include wood, plastic, and metal.

Another term for the pan flute is syrinx, from Greek mythology, the story of Pan. The plural of syrinx is syringes, from which the modern word syringe is derived. (Pan pipes is both singular and plural.) Other names for the instrument include the Latin fistula panis.

Mozart: Concertos for Flute; Concerto for Flute & Harp $14.38 The cover of this album, with the featured Mozart-era flute disassembled into a half-dozen compartments in its box, piques the listener’s interest. (Actually, a copy of the instrument is heard on the album.) So does the sound of the wooden flute when one gets to hear it: it doesn’t have the fluttering, agile quality of a modern flute, but rather a sweet, whistling tone. With the small, authentic-instrument accompaniment of the Ensemble Schönbrunn backing flutist Marten Root, the listener has the feeling of hearing these works pretty much as Mozart heard them when he wrote them in Paris at the end of the 1770s. So it’s disappointing that the performances here aren’t all they could be. There’s a certain trivial but ingratiating quality to these works — which Mozart himself didn’t care for, if he can be believed — that is essential to their realization; they have to be sentimental and cute, but Root’s performances, although they make very nice use of the old-style flute technically, don’t quite have the necessary Parisian-entertainment quality. The sonic atmosphere of Amsterdam’s Waalse Kerk, not a large church but still large enough to make the music feel remote, also works to the music’s detriment. Recording music meant for crowded aristocratic soirées in an empty church is often wrong, and here it results in the harp of Masumi Nagasawa in the Concerto for flute, harp, and orchestra in C major, K. 299, being swallowed up in its quieter passages. Her harp is likewise an old instrument with an interesting tone, but it seems to fade in and out like a radio station suffering from poor reception. This recording will not displease the Mozart lover, and it has little competition in the historical-performance arena when it comes to these works. Ciardi: Music for Flute $7.18 Cesare Ciardi (1818-1877), a flutist and composer who supplied himself with works as needed, was apparently known as the Paganini of the flute. He toured widely and actually spent much of his career not in Italy but in Russia. The real virtuoso showpiece on this album of his almost-forgotten music is the opening Gran Concerto for flute and orchestra in D minor, Op. 129, in which the flute careens around trills and thirty-second-note runs introduced by huge leaps. It might make interesting listening for flutists, but for the average listener the flute has fewer arcane realms than the violin does — Ciardi has nothing to offer to match Paganini’s bag of tricks. More compelling are the flute-and-piano pieces based on folk tunes heard at the album’s end. Most of these were intended to present music from Ciardi’s Italian homeland to his Russian audience, but one, Le rossignol du nord, Op. 45 (The Northern Nightingale), uses Russian melodies and rhythms. These works allow the flute pyrotechnics to grow naturally from a simple melodic basis, and there might be an unusual encore piece or two here for the flutist in search of a nifty program-ender. Flutist Roberto Fabbriciani, who has reconstructed and re-edited much of the music here, makes the best possible case for it, and he receives enthusiastic support form the Orchestra Sinfonica del Friuli Venezia Giulia — the orchestra of the northeastern Italian region between Venice and Trieste. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Massimiliano Damerini – Piano; Roberto Fabbriciani – Flute
